WWF buys $100000 shark fishing licence to stop someone else from using it
Conservation group WWF Australia has purchased a commercial shark fishing licence on the Great Barrier Reef, with the sole aim of removing it from circulation. The Great Barrier Reef has been in the news a lot lately, with 93 percent of the reef bleached earlier this year, hordes of Crown of Thorns starfish still causing damage, and plans to dredge the sea floor in a number of areas. But at least fishing is banned in the area… unless you spend enough money on a special licence, that is.  The AU..

  • Astronomers Just Spotted A Water Snow Line Around A Star For The First Time

Astronomers Just Spotted A Water Snow Line Around A Star For The First Time
Astronomers Just Spotted A Water Snow Line Around A Star For The First Time A telescope just snagged the very first image of a water snow line drifting around a young star in space — and it could transform what we know about how planets form. Artist’s conception of a water snow line around a young star (Image: A. Angelich (NRAO/AUI/NSF)/ALMA (ESO/NAOJ/NRAO)) The extreme conditions around young stars sometimes means that water goes directly from gas into snow and ice, skipping the liquid phase..

  • How to get rid of flying foxes? Organise a tourist event

FLYING foxes appear to have once again outsmarted humans, this time moving a roost just as a group of tourists paid money to view it. The spectacle is a nightmare for many residents on ..

China's descending space module may not be out of control after all
Hi, everybody: Please chill out. While some overblown headlines may lead you to believe that China's space station module — which played host to Chinese astronauts in the past — is on an imminent, possibly dangerous crash course with Earth, that's not the full story. It's true that eventually China's Tiangong-1 — which translates to "heavenly palace" in English —  will eventually come back through Earth's atmosphere, but that breakup isn't necessarily happening in the next few weeks, and even i..

  • Was A Supernova Responsible For A Mass Extinction On Earth?

Was A Supernova Responsible For A Mass Extinction On Earth?
Is it possible for a supernova explosion hundreds of light-years away to cause mass extinctions on our planet? This may well be the case, as a new study suggests this is what happened roughly 2.59 million years ago, says Tech Times. One of these explosions may have been a contributor to a minor mass extinction. It sent out high velocity charged particles called cosmic rays that were quite possibly responsible for the die-out at the end of the Pliocene era, say researchers. Supernova explosion [..
